Mental Illness : Triggers

I always read posts in a mental health group in media social. In most of the posts, the writer always start with the phrase " trigger warning " at the beginning. What is a trigger warning. Why must someone put a trigger warning in the begining of a post for mentally ill people.

Trigger warning is a mentioning of a possiblity that the content in the post may make someone with mental illness got stressed, angry or emotionally unstable by reading it. It is important to warn readers about the content before they read it.

Triggers also happens in daily life of the mentally ill person. It is usually disturbs the person emotionally and also physically.  Trigger is a thing or words or situation that make the mentally ill person to become mentally unstable and may act in an unacceptable or even dangerous manner.

It is important to the people around the mentally ill person to act kindly and don't do anything that can trigger a mentally ill person. They may be down, isolate themselves, harm themselves or sometimes hurt the person who trigger them. If the patient act negatively because of triggers people put on them, we cannot blame them. Because usually mentally ill person have no control of their actions and words when they are ill and unstable. They usually have no control of themselves when they are unstable.

It is wise to mentally ill people to avoid being with or frequently communicating with people who may trigger them. And also to avoid issues and situations that can trigger them. As much as possible.

Some people don't understand the situation mentally ill patients are in. They don't know they may offend a mentally ill person. But best thing to do is to be kind to these person, both in words and action. Just also remember everything we did in life will be judged in the afterlife. Be kind and thoughtful to people, and you may get a peaceful and content life ahead.
